Shanghai subsidies for UK companies
UK companies with a Shanghai entity can access the same local grant and subsidy programmes as domestic firms. The hard part is finding the notices, understanding the Chinese requirements, and hitting short application windows.
Information only. Programmes, amounts and deadlines change; confirm with the official Chinese notice. We do not submit applications or guarantee outcomes.
What UK companies typically qualify for
- High-tech enterprise (HNTE) — 15% corporate income tax instead of 25% for R&D-driven companies with IP and technical staff.
- SRDI SME — recognition grants for specialised, sophisticated, distinctive and innovative SMEs.
- Innovation vouchers — subsidies for testing, R&D design and IP services.
- Commerce fund — support for retail, exhibition, culture-tourism-sports projects.
- Employment and training subsidies — smaller amounts, simpler documents.
What usually blocks UK applicants
- Notices are published in Chinese across nine different government sites.
- Contracts, invoices and IP must belong to the Shanghai entity — not the overseas parent.
- R&D expense ledgers must reconcile with audited financials.
- Application windows are often 2–4 weeks.
